An avid listener of country music from an early age, Parker McCollum further expanded his musical awareness while working with his grandfather on a cattle ranch during summers off from school. They listened to folk music artists as well. His first instrument was the violin, which he picked up in elementary school and played in the orchestra there, before switching to the guitar when he was 13. This was also when he started composing his own music, and he was already mixing genres then. He cites his older brother Tyler, who is also a lyricist and songwriter, as another big influence in this whole process. Gigs soon followed, first at open mics around his area and then as the headliner at local establishments. During this time, he also picked up the harmonica. Through high school and into college, he continued developing his playing and songwriting until his first tour, which was with the band Six Market Blvd.
